Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage: Which One Fits You Best for 2026?

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period is here, running from October 15 to December 7, 2025, with a second window from January 1 to March 31, 2026 for those already enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

If you’re nearing retirement or reviewing your coverage, this is your chance to make sure your plan fits your health and budget for the new year.

Original Medicare: Flexible and Widely Accepted

Original Medicare includes:

  • Part A – Hospital insurance

  • Part B – Medical insurance

It’s accepted nationwide and doesn’t require referrals for specialists. However, it doesn’t cover most prescription drugs, dental, or vision care unless you add:

  • A Part D plan (for prescriptions)

  • A Medigap policy (for deductibles and coinsurance)

Best for: People who travel often or want the freedom to see any Medicare-approved doctor.

Medicare Advantage: All-in-One Convenience

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. It bundles hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage — plus extras like:

  • Dental and vision care

  • Hearing aids

  • Gym memberships

  • Transportation to appointments

Best for: Those looking for lower premiums, extra benefits, and simplified coverage in one plan.

How to Decide

Your best option depends on your health needs, budget, and lifestyle:

  • Travel a lot or see multiple specialists? Original Medicare offers more flexibility.

  • Want bundled perks and local network care? Medicare Advantage might fit better.

Before you decide, compare plans using the Medicare Plan Finder or reach out to your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for free guidance.

Don’t Miss the Deadline

Changes made during open enrollment take effect January 1, 2026.

If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll have another chance to switch or return to Original Medicare between January 1 and March 31, 2026.
