Summer EBT 2025: Who’s Getting SUN Bucks This Year and How Much You’ll Receive

Summer break can be a time of joy for kids, but for many families, it also brings stress.

With schools closed, millions of children lose access to the free and reduced-price meals they rely on during the academic year.

That’s why the Summer EBT program, also called SUN Bucks, is back for 2025.

If you’re raising school-age children and rely on assistance during the year, this benefit could make a real difference in the months ahead.

What Is Summer EBT (SUN Bucks)?

Summer EBT provides $120 per eligible child, enough to help cover food costs during June, July, and August.

Families can use the benefit at stores that accept EBT, just like SNAP.

It’s simple, targeted support when families need it most.

Who Gets the Benefit and How?

If your child qualifies for free or reduced-price meals during the school year, you're likely eligible.

Depending on where you live, your Summer EBT benefits will arrive in one of three ways:

  • On your current EBT card (if you receive SNAP)

  • On the same card used last summer

  • On a new Summer EBT card mailed to your home

Most states will start issuing benefits between late May and early June 2025.

The funds will expire 122 days after being loaded, so plan to use them during the summer window.

What Can You Buy with Summer EBT?

These benefits can be spent just like regular SNAP funds on qualifying grocery items:

  • Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)

  • Meat, poultry, seafood

  • Dairy items like milk, yogurt, and cheese

  • Cereal, bread, beans, rice

  • Snacks and drinks

You cannot use SUN Bucks for prepared foods, cleaning supplies, diapers, or other non-food items.

Visit your state’s Department of Human Services or the official USDA Summer EBT website for state-specific updates.

These months don’t have to be harder. With Summer EBT 2025, families get a little breathing room and a little more food on the table.
